USB-C Power Delivery Explained

USB-C is the connector; PD is the protocol

USB-C describes a physical connector and its reversible plug shape. It does not by itself promise a particular charging speed, data rate, or display capability. USB Power Delivery is a communication protocol that lets a compatible charger and device negotiate an appropriate power contract over a USB-C connection.

Voltage, current, and watts

Electrical power is commonly described in watts, calculated as voltage multiplied by current. A charger may offer several voltage and current combinations, while the device requests what it can accept. The highest number printed on a charger is not automatically delivered to every device; the device, cable, and negotiated profile limit the result.

What negotiation does

A compatible source and sink exchange capability information and settle on a supported contract. The charger does not simply force its maximum into the device. If a component is not PD-capable, the connection may fall back to another supported mode or charge more slowly. The connector shape cannot tell you which of those behaviours applies.

Cables are part of the chain

A USB-C cable may support different power, data, or alternate-mode capabilities. Higher-power charging can require a cable with the appropriate rating and identification. A cable that fits may still be limited, damaged, too long for the task, or intended mainly for data. Treat the charger, cable, device, and port as one system.

Common misconceptions

A larger charger does not override a laptop or phone’s input limit. A USB-C port does not guarantee video output. A multi-port charger may share its available power when several devices are connected. Check the device documentation and charger specifications, keep connectors cool and undamaged, and replace a cable that becomes hot or intermittent.
