Why Drill Bits Slip
A safe troubleshooting guide to slipping drill bits, including chuck grip, worn bits, speed, starting technique, and material.
Most slipping is a grip or setup problem
A bit can slip because it is not seated correctly, the chuck is not tightened, the bit is worn or mismatched, or the drill is being pushed at a speed and pressure the material cannot accept. Start by switching off and removing the battery or disconnecting the tool before inspecting the bit and chuck.
Check the bit and chuck
Look for a bent shank, rounded cutting edges, packed debris, or a bit that is too small or too large for the chuck. Seat the shank straight and tighten the chuck using the intended method. A keyless chuck still needs firm hand tightening; do not use pliers unless the manufacturer explicitly permits it.
Starting the hole
A bit is more likely to walk on a smooth surface or when the starting point is not supported. Mark the centre, use a suitable pilot size, and begin slowly with the drill square to the work. A centre punch can help on appropriate metal, but avoid creating a deep mark where it could damage a finished surface.
Material-specific causes
Wood can grab when a dull bit meets knots or when the bit is forced. Metal needs the correct bit, controlled speed, and sometimes cutting fluid specified for the job. Masonry requires a suitable masonry bit and a drill mode intended for that material. A slipping bit is not fixed by simply increasing pressure.
When to stop
Stop if the chuck, shaft, or bit is visibly damaged, the tool vibrates abnormally, or the workpiece cannot be held securely. Do not continue near hidden wiring, plumbing, gas, or structural elements without resolving the risk. Replace a worn bit and recheck alignment before trying again.
